Our Take

FUOCO FATUO, the Milan-based band known for their sludgy, atmospheric doom metal sound, has returned with their latest offering, "Obsidian Katabasis."

From the hauntingly beautiful album artwork to the bone-crushing riffs and soul-crushing vocals, this album is a journey through the depths of hell and back.

The opening track, "Katabasis," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its slow, plaintive melodies and crushing drums. It's like being dragged down into the underworld by a horde of demons - in the best way possible, of course.

Throughout the album, FUOCO FATUO takes the listener on a sonic rollercoaster ride through a landscape of darkness and despair. Songs like "Chthonic Gateways" and "Into the Keen Abyss" showcase the band's ability to create a sense of foreboding and unease with their music.

But it's not all doom and gloom - tracks like "Hallucination in Negative" and "Serpentine Megalith" offer moments of respite, with shimmering guitars and eerie whispers that add a touch of ethereal beauty to the mix.

In conclusion, "Obsidian Katabasis" is a masterclass in atmospheric doom metal that will leave you breathless and trembling in awe. FUOCO FATUO has once again proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of extreme music.

About the artist

Fuoco Fatuo

A monolithic force in the realm of extreme doom metal, Italy's Fuoco Fatuo have been conjuring musical cataclysms since their formation in 2011. With a name that translates to "Will-o'-the-wisp" in English, this Milan-based five-piece band brings a haunting, ethereal quality to their bone-crushing sonic landscapes. Fuoco Fatuo's music is an exercise in tension and release, with crushing, slow-motion riffs giving way to eerie, atmospheric passages that sound like they were dredged up from the deepest pits of hell. Their sound is steeped in the traditions of funeral doom and death-doom, but with a touch of avant-garde experimentation that sets them apart from their peers. Led by vocalist and guitarist Emiliano, Fuoco Fatuo's lineup is rounded out by drummer Eurovocals, guitarist and keyboardist Marco, bassist and synth player Giga, and guitarist and synth player Paolo. Together, they create a sonic tapestry that is as beautiful as it is devastating. With two full-length albums under their belt – 2013's "The Viper Slithers in the Ashes of What Remains" and 2017's "Backwater" – Fuoco Fatuo have firmly established themselves as one of the most exciting bands in the underground metal scene. Their music is not for the faint of heart, but for those willing to brave the depths of despair, Fuoco Fatuo offer a cathartic journey unlike any other.
