Our Take

Ultravox's "Lament" is like a blast from the past, but with a futuristic twist that feels as out of place as a cucumber sandwich at a punk rock festival. The album kicks off with "White China," a track that blends synth-pop with a guitar riff that wouldn't be out of place in a hair metal band. It's a confusing mix that somehow works, like a pineapple on pizza. Throughout the album, frontman Midge Ure's vocals soar like a majestic albatross, while the band's signature synths swirl around like a swarm of bees at a garden party. Tracks like "One Small Day" and "Heart Of The Country" showcase Ultravox's ability to create atmospheric soundscapes that transport you to a different dimension, one where shoulder pads are mandatory and neon is the new black. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows on "Lament." The album does have its missteps, like the overly dramatic "Man Of Two Worlds" which feels like it belongs in a cheesy 80s movie montage. And let's not even talk about the cringe-worthy spoken word interlude on "A Friend I Call Desire." Overall, "Lament" is a mixed bag of nostalgic synth-pop goodness and questionable creative choices. It's like a rollercoaster ride through the 80s, with all the highs and lows that come with it. Love it or hate it, Ultravox's "Lament" is a wild ride that's worth taking, if only for the sheer audacity of it all.
