Our Take

Ah, Humbug - the third studio album from those lovable scamps, the Arctic Monkeys. One might say that this album is a bit of a departure from their earlier sound, with its dark, brooding atmosphere and production that is more layered than a trifle at a fancy dinner party.

From the opening track "My Propeller," you can tell that the Monkeys are not messing about here. The guitars are fuzzier, the lyrics are more cryptic, and Alex Turner's vocals are as smoky as a barbecue in Texas. It's like they traded in their indie charm for a leather jacket and a bad attitude.

Tracks like "Crying Lightning" and "Cornerstone" showcase the band's ability to craft catchy tunes with a twist, while songs like "Pretty Visitors" and "Secret Door" delve into more experimental territory, with swirling guitars and haunting melodies.

Overall, Humbug is a bit of a mixed bag. It may not be as immediately accessible as their earlier work, but give it a few spins and you'll find that it's a grower, not a shower.
