Our Take

Portuguese gothic metal veterans Moonspell have once again ventured into the dark and ethereal with their latest album, "Hermitage." This record sees the band exploring new sonic territories while still maintaining their signature brooding sound.

The opening track, "The Greater Good," sets the mood with its haunting melodies and cascading vocals. Frontman Fernando Ribeiro's hypnotic voice draws listeners into a world of melancholy and introspection. The track "Common Prayers" further showcases the band's ability to blend beauty and brutality, with crushing riffs juxtaposed with delicate piano melodies.

"Hermitage" is a masterclass in atmosphere, with tracks like "All or Nothing" enveloping listeners in a shroud of darkness and despair. The band's use of orchestral elements adds layers of complexity to their already rich sound, creating a truly immersive listening experience.

However, not every moment on this album hits the mark. Tracks like "Without Rule" feel somewhat repetitive and lack the dynamism of the album's stronger moments. Despite this, "Hermitage" is a solid addition to Moonspell's discography and a must-listen for fans of gothic metal.

Overall, "Hermitage" is a captivating and brooding journey through the shadows, showcasing Moonspell's ability to blend beauty and darkness with finesse. While not every track is a standout, the album as a whole is a mesmerizing listening experience that will leave fans eagerly awaiting the band's next move.

About the artist

Moonspell

MOONSPELL are the Portuguese metal legends, and they've been haunting stages around the world for over three decades now. Forget about being just another metal band- MOONSPELL are a force to be reckoned with, blending gothic influences, symphonic elements, and a healthy dose of sheer metal mayhem. Led by frontman Fernando Ribeiro, who can switch effortlessly from a guttural growl to a haunting, melodic croon in seconds, this band knows how to keep their audience on their toes. Their live shows are a spectacle to behold - expect fire, blood, and a whole lot of headbanging. And don't even get me started on their wardrobe - these guys could give Lady Gaga a run for her money. Their discography is as diverse as it is thrilling, with albums ranging from the gothic masterpiece "Wolfheart" to the dark and brooding "1755," a concept album about the Great Lisbon Earthquake. Each release showcases the band's ability to evolve and experiment, while still staying true to their roots. But don't just take my word for it - MOONSPELL have garnered a loyal cult following over the years, and for good reason. Whether you're a seasoned metalhead or just dipping your toes into the genre, MOONSPELL are guaranteed to leave you spellbound. So buckle up, because this rollercoaster ride of darkness and intensity is one you won't want to miss.
