Our Take

Fleet Foxes’ sophomore effort, "Helplessness Blues," is like sipping a cup of tea on a rainy day - soothing, comforting, and utterly British. The Seattle band's harmonies are tighter than a pair of skinny jeans, weaving intricate tapestries of folk goodness that make me want to don a tweed jacket and dance a jig. Frontman Robin Pecknold's voice is smoother than a pint of Guinness, effortlessly gliding over lush instrumentation that recalls the heyday of British folk music. Tracks like "Montezuma" and "Helplessness Blues" are like a stroll through the English countryside, with lyrics that are as poetic as Shakespearean sonnets. Each song feels like a warm embrace from a dear friend, enveloping you in a sense of nostalgia and longing. But don't be fooled by the quaint exterior - Fleet Foxes have a mischievous twinkle in their eye. Just when you think you've got them pegged as twee folksters, they throw in a curveball like the rollicking "Grown Ocean" or the haunting "The Shrine / An Argument," proving that they're not afraid to push boundaries. "Helplessness Blues" is a delightful blend of tradition and innovation, a quintessentially British homage to the roots of folk music with a modern twist. So grab a cuppa, put on your wellies, and let Fleet Foxes serenade you into a blissful reverie. Cheers!
