About the artist
Mel Tormé
Mel Torme, also known as "The Velvet Fog," was a true Renaissance man in the world of music. With a career spanning over six decades, Torme not only wowed audiences with his smooth vocals but also impressed with his talents as a songwriter, actor, and drummer. Born in Chicago in 1925, Torme was a child prodigy who began performing professionally at the tender age of 4. By the time he was a teenager, he was already a seasoned performer, captivating audiences with his velvety voice and charming stage presence. Torme's music career took off in the late 1940s when he joined the Mel-Tones, a vocal group that gained popularity for their tight harmonies and innovative arrangements. Torme's solo career soon followed, with hits like "The Christmas Song" and "Blue Moon" cementing his status as a jazz icon. But Torme was more than just a crooner. He was also a talented songwriter, penning hits for artists like Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald. In addition, Torme dabbled in acting, appearing in films and TV shows throughout his career. Despite his success, Torme remained humble and down-to-earth, always putting music and performance above all else. His passion for his craft was infectious, and his influence can still be felt in the music world today. So here's to Mel Torme, the Velvet Fog who floated effortlessly through the world of music, leaving behind a trail of jazz-infused magic for generations to come.
