Our Take
Our Take
In his 1949 album "California Suite," the chocolate-voiced crooner Mel Torme takes us on a musical journey through the sunny state, blending jazz, pop, and swing into a smooth and sophisticated concoction. Torme's velvety vocals glide effortlessly over the lively arrangements, transporting listeners to the palm tree-lined streets of Los Angeles, the bustling beaches of San Francisco, and the picturesque vineyards of Napa Valley.
From the Latin-infused rhythms of "California Suite" to the dreamy balladry of "Cuckoo in the Clock," Torme showcases his versatility and charm, proving why he was known as "The Velvet Fog." The standout track "Golden Gate" is a swinging tribute to the iconic bridge, with Torme's scatting skills impressively on display. Meanwhile, "Hooray for Hollywood" pays homage to the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown, capturing the allure of the silver screen in musical form.
With its lush orchestrations and timeless melodies, "California Suite" is a delightful romp through the Golden State, guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. So grab a cocktail, kick back, and let Mel Torme whisk you away to a sun-soaked paradise where the music never stops and the vibes are always cool. Cheers to that, baby!
