Ah, Burzum - the gift that keeps on giving, or should I say, the gift that keeps on burning churches? Draugen - Rarities is a collection of tracks that don't quite fit into Varg Vikernes' usual black metal narrative, but hey, who doesn't love a good curveball now and then?
The album kicks off with "Lost Wisdom," a haunting acoustic track that can only be described as the sound of a forest spirit lamenting the state of modern society. Think Nick Drake meets Emperor, but with a touch of insanity thrown in for good measure.
As we delve deeper into the murky waters of Draugen - Rarities, we are treated to a plethora of oddities, from ambient interludes that sound like the distorted screams of tortured souls, to eerie folk melodies that wouldn't be out of place in a Viking funeral.
But perhaps the standout track on the album is "Dancing in the Dark," a cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic that transforms the anthemic 80s hit into a brooding, nihilistic anthem for the end of the world. Vikernes' vocals are as chilling as ever, conveying a sense of despair that can only come from someone who has seen too much darkness in their lifetime.
In conclusion, Burzum's Draugen - Rarities is a must-listen for fans of experimental black metal, or for anyone who enjoys a good dose of existential dread with their morning coffee. Just don't play it too loud, unless you want to summon the ancient spirits of the forest to come and haunt your dreams.
