Our Take
In a world where metal can sometimes take itself a bit too seriously, Candlemass swoops in like a black-clad, doom-laden superhero to bring some much-needed dark humour to the table with their latest album, "Black Star". From the opening chords of the title track, it's abundantly clear that Candlemass are not here to play around. The heavy, crunchy riffs are like a punch to the gut, while vocalist Johan Längquist's haunting wails transport you straight to the depths of hell (in the best way possible, of course). But what sets "Black Star" apart from the rest of the doom metal pack is its cheeky, self-aware lyrics. Tracks like "Death Knell of the Iron Sun" and "Bridge of the Blind" are packed full of ridiculous, over-the-top imagery that is impossible not to crack a smile at. Even the production on this album is tongue-in-cheek, with the guitars sounding so fuzzed out and muddy that it's like listening to the songs through a thick layer of cobwebs. In a genre that can sometimes take itself a bit too seriously, Candlemass remind us that metal can still be fun, and "Black Star" is the perfect soundtrack to headbanging your way through the apocalypse.
