Our Take
Our Take
Deftones have always been a band that defies categorisation, blending elements of metal, shoegaze and alternative rock to create their own unique sound. On their latest release, "B-sides & Rarities", the Sacramento rockers delve into their treasure trove of hidden gems with mixed results.
Opening track "Savory" sees frontman Chino Moreno's haunting vocals take centre stage, with the band's signature wall of guitars providing a relentless backdrop. The cover of Jawbox's classic tune is a bold move, but Deftones make it their own with their trademark intensity.
However, the album's other offerings veer into more questionable territory. Tracks like "Simple Man" and "No Ordinary Love" feel like filler material, lacking the energy and urgency of the band's best work. It's hard not to wonder why these songs were left on the cutting room floor in the first place.
That being said, "B-sides & Rarities" does have its moments of brilliance. The atmospheric "The Chauffeur" showcases the band's experimental side, while "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" is a hauntingly beautiful cover that highlights Moreno's emotive vocals.
In the end, "B-sides & Rarities" is a mixed bag that will appeal to devoted fans of Deftones, but may leave casual listeners scratching their heads. While the band's adventurous spirit is commendable, not all of their musical experiments hit the mark.
