Our Take
Our Take
When it comes to Americana music, the Maddox Brothers and Rose are the stuff of legends. Hailing from the hills of California, this rowdy bunch of siblings brought a unique blend of country, rockabilly, and gospel to the masses in the 1950s. And now, thanks to the good folks over at Arhoolie Records, we have a new collection of their finest tunes from 1952-1957, titled "You Won't Believe This! Selected Singles & More".
From the first crackling notes of "Water Baby Boogie", you know you're in for a wild ride with the Maddox crew. These guys don't hold back - their music is as loud and brash as their personalities. Tracks like "Ugly and Slouchy" and "I Want to Live and Love" showcase their raucous energy and devil-may-care attitude.
But it's not all fun and games with the Maddox Brothers and Rose. Some of the tracks on this collection, like "I'll Make Sweet Love to You" and "I Wish I Was a Single Girl Again", show a more tender side to the group. The vocals are raw and emotive, the harmonies tight and soulful.
Overall, "You Won't Believe This!" is a rollicking good time from start to finish. So grab your partner, throw on your dancing shoes, and get ready to two-step the night away with the Maddox Brothers and Rose. You won't regret it, I promise you that.

About the artist
The Maddox Brothers & Rose
In the wild and woolly world of country music, few acts have left as indelible a mark as the Maddox Brothers and Rose. Hailing from the dusty plains of California, this raucous sextet burst onto the scene in the 1940s with a sound that was as electrifying as it was infectious. Brothers Cal and Fred Maddox held down the rhythm section with their rapid-fire guitar and bass playing, while the three Rose sisters (Rose, Donna, and Vicky) belted out harmonies that could make even the most stoic cowboy tap his boots. But don't let their wholesome image fool you - the Maddox Brothers and Rose were not your average country crooners. Known for their rowdy stage antics and penchant for raunchy lyrics, they were the bad boys (and girls) of the honky-tonk circuit, attracting a loyal following of rebel rousers and hell-raisers wherever they went. Their pioneering use of electric instruments and unapologetically loud sound set them apart from their more polished contemporaries, earning them a reputation as the wild child of the Grand Ole Opry. Songs like "Ugly and Slouchy" and "Mama Says It's Naughty" pushed the boundaries of acceptability in conservative country circles, but fans couldn't get enough of their devil-may-care attitude and devilishly catchy tunes. Although they may not be a household name today, the influence of the Maddox Brothers and Rose can still be heard in the rebellious spirit of modern country music. So next time you're feeling a bit country, why not crank up some Maddox Brothers and Rose and let the good times roll? Trust us, you won't regret it.
