Our Take
Ah, Andre Rieu, the wizard of the violin, the maestro of the orchestra, the master of the melodramatic. His latest album, "You Raise Me Up - Songs for Mum," is a flamboyant and over-the-top tribute to all the wonderful mums out there. From the first track, Rieu unleashes a barrage of strings and brass that would make even the most stoic mother shed a tear. The title track, a cover of the classic hit by Westlife, is given a bombastic makeover with Rieu's signature flair and grandeur. But it's not all sentimental ballads and orchestral swells. Rieu also throws in a few surprises like a toe-tapping rendition of ABBA's "Dancing Queen" and a cheeky take on The Spice Girls' "Mama." However, despite Rieu's obvious talent and showmanship, "You Raise Me Up - Songs for Mum" can't help but feel a bit too cheesy and schmaltzy at times. The relentless crescendos and dramatic flourishes may leave some listeners feeling a bit overwhelmed and in need of a musical palette cleanser. Overall, Andre Rieu's latest offering is a mixed bag of emotions. If you're in the mood for some uplifting and sentimental tunes to dedicate to your mum, then this album is sure to hit the spot. But if you're looking for something a bit more subtle and nuanced, you may want to look elsewhere.
