Our Take
Our Take
FORTID's latest offering, "World Serpent," is a whirlwind of sound that manages to simultaneously captivate and confound. From the opening track, it's clear that this album is not content to adhere to any one genre or convention. The band's ability to seamlessly blend elements of black metal, folk, and even ambient music is truly impressive.
Lead singer Kjetil Hektoen's vocals are haunting and ethereal, floating above a sea of intricate guitar work and thunderous drumming. The production on this album is top-notch, with every instrument given room to breathe and shine. The layers of sound build and crest, creating a sonic landscape that is both brutal and beautiful.
There are moments of sheer brilliance on "World Serpent," such as the mesmerizing guitar solo on "Fimbulvetr" and the haunting chants that punctuate "Yggdrasil." However, there are also times when the album veers dangerously close to self-indulgence, with some tracks meandering without purpose.
Overall, FORTID have crafted an album that is ambitious and bold, pushing the boundaries of what black metal can be. "World Serpent" is a journey into the depths of the human soul, a sonic odyssey that will leave you both exhilarated and exhausted. Love it or hate it, you can't deny the sheer craftsmanship and creativity on display here.
