Our Take

Matata's latest album, Wild River, is a rollercoaster ride of musical genius and pure madness. This Kenyan Afro-fusion band has truly outdone themselves with this eclectic mix of genres, throwing in everything but the kitchen sink - and possibly even that too.

From the melodic grooves of "Amani" to the infectious energy of "Ngoma", each track on Wild River takes the listener on a musical journey through the depths of the band's creativity. The instrumentation is top-notch, with killer guitar riffs and mesmerizing drum beats that will have you dancing in your seat.

But it's not just the instrumentals that make this album shine - the vocal performances are outstanding too. Lead singer Nyambura's voice is like honey to the ears, soaring effortlessly over the intricate arrangements and carrying the listener along for the ride.

However, as much as we love the energy and passion on display here, we can't help but feel like the band may have thrown too much into the mix. Wild River at times feels a bit overwhelming, with so many ideas vying for attention that it's hard to fully digest on first listen.

Overall, Matata's Wild River is a wild and unpredictable ride that will leave you breathless and begging for more. It may not be perfect, but it's certainly a bold statement from a band that refuses to play it safe. Dive into this musical river at your own risk, but be prepared to be swept away by its sheer audacity.

About the artist

Matata

MATATA are not your typical music group. Hailing from Nairobi, Kenya, this eclectic ensemble blends elements of Afro-pop, funk, and reggae to create a sound that is as fresh as it is infectious. Lead vocalist Silver, with his smooth crooning and dynamic stage presence, is the undeniable star of the show. But it is the seamless harmonies and tight instrumentals provided by the rest of the band that truly make MATATA stand out from the crowd. With influences ranging from Fela Kuti to Bob Marley, MATATA have managed to carve out their own unique sound that is equal parts nostalgic and forward-thinking. Their music is a celebration of life, love, and the power of music to bring people together. But don't let their laid-back vibes fool you – MATATA are not afraid to tackle important social issues in their lyrics. From political corruption to environmental degradation, they use their platform to shed light on the pressing issues facing their home continent of Africa. Whether you're a seasoned music critic or just looking for a good time, MATATA's infectious energy and catchy tunes are sure to leave you dancing all night long. So grab your dancing shoes and get ready to experience the magic of MATATA – you won't be disappointed.
