Our Take
U2, the Irish rockers with a penchant for grandiosity, are back with their latest offering, "We Will Follow." This album sees the band continue to blend anthemic guitar riffs with Bono's soaring vocals, creating a sound that is undeniable and, at times, unbelievably cheesy. From the opening track, "City of Blinding Lights," it's clear that U2 have not lost their ability to craft stadium-ready rock anthems. Bono's vocals are as powerful as ever, carrying the listener through each track with a sense of gravitas and urgency. The Edge's shimmering guitar work adds a layer of atmosphere that is both ethereal and driving, propelling even the most mediocre songs forward. However, for all its bombast and bravado, "We Will Follow" suffers from a lack of originality. Many of the tracks feel like they could have been lifted straight from the band's previous albums, with little to differentiate them from past hits like "Beautiful Day" or "Where the Streets Have No Name." Even a guest appearance from Kendrick Lamar on "Get Out of Your Own Way" fails to inject new life into the tired formula. Overall, "We Will Follow" is a solid, if unremarkable, addition to U2's discography. While fans of the band will undoubtedly find much to love here, those looking for something fresh and exciting may be left wanting more. So, in the words of Bono himself, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for."
