Our Take
Our Take
Get ready to dim the lights, pour yourself a stiff drink, and slip into the smooth, seductive world of Wardell Gray's "Way Out Wardell." This album is like a fine wine - it only gets better with age.
Gray's saxophone skills are on full display here, weaving intricate melodies that will transport you to a smoky jazz club in the heart of New York City. His improvisational prowess is second to none, with each note dripping with emotion and nuance.
The backing band on this album is top-notch, providing a solid foundation for Gray to work his magic. The rhythm section is tight and groovy, keeping the energy up and the listener engaged throughout.
Standout tracks include the melancholic "Lover Man," the upbeat and swinging "Sweet Lorraine," and the sultry "Easy Living." Each song is a journey in itself, with Gray's expressive playing leading the way.
Overall, "Way Out Wardell" is a must-listen for any jazz aficionado. Gray's talent shines through on every track, leaving a lasting impression that will have you coming back for more. So grab a copy, sit back, and let Wardell Gray whisk you away on a musical adventure you won't soon forget. Cheers to that!

About the artist
Wardell Gray
Armed with a saxophone and a killer sense of style, WARDELL GRAY is a legendary figure in the world of jazz music. Born in Oklahoma in 1921, Gray cut his teeth in the vibrant jazz scene of Los Angeles before making his mark on the global stage. With his smooth tone and impeccable technique, Gray quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented saxophonists of his generation. His work with the likes of Benny Goodman and Count Basie solidified his status as a jazz luminary, while his own recordings showcased his unique blend of traditional jazz and bebop. But it wasn't just Gray's musical chops that set him apart – his penchant for flashy suits and love of the spotlight made him a true showman on and off the stage. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Gray was always the life of the party, whether he was playing a sold-out show or hanging out in the local jazz club. Tragically, Gray's life was cut short in 1955 when he passed away at the young age of 34. But his legacy lives on in the countless recordings he left behind, each one a testament to his incredible talent and enduring spirit. WARDELL GRAY may be gone, but his music will continue to inspire jazz lovers for generations to come.
