Our Take

Oi oi, what do we 'ave 'ere then? It's only the legendary U ROY with his latest offering "Wake The Nation". And let me tell ya, this album is like a breath of fresh air on a dreary London day.

U ROY, the original toaster himself, brings back his signature style of reggae-dub fusion with a modern twist. The album kicks off with the infectious title track "Wake The Nation", a call to arms for all the rebels and revolutionaries out there. The groovy basslines and hypnotic rhythms will have you skanking your way through the streets of Brixton in no time.

Tracks like "Jah Jah Call You" and "Love Is Overdue" showcase U ROY's smooth flow and lyrical prowess, proving that he's still got it after all these years. And let's not forget the killer collaborations with the likes of Chronixx and Protoje, adding a fresh edge to the classic sound.

Overall, "Wake The Nation" is a must-listen for any reggae fan, old or new. U ROY shows us once again why he's a true pioneer in the genre, with a sound that's as relevant today as it was back in the day. So grab a pint of Red Stripe, crank up the volume, and let U ROY take you on a musical journey you won't soon forget. Cheers, mate!

About the artist

U-Roy

U ROY may not be a household name to the mainstream masses, but within the realms of reggae music, this Jamaican legend stands tall as one of the pioneers of the genre. With his signature style of toasting (or DJing as it's known in Jamaica), U ROY revolutionised the sound of reggae in the 1970s, bringing his unique blend of lyrics and rhythm to the forefront of the music scene. Born Ewart Beckford in Kingston, Jamaica in 1942, U ROY's career began in the late 1960s, when he started performing at local sound systems and clubs. It wasn't long before his distinctive voice and rhythmic flow caught the attention of producers, leading to the release of his debut album "Version Galore" in 1971. U ROY's impact on the music world cannot be overstated. His innovative approach to toasting laid the foundation for the development of hip-hop and dancehall music, influencing countless artists along the way. His collaborations with artists such as The Paragons and The Melodians have cemented his legacy as a true icon of reggae music. Despite his decades-long career, U ROY shows no signs of slowing down. His performances are a masterclass in showmanship and his infectious energy can still electrify a crowd like no other. Whether you're a die-hard reggae fan or a newcomer to the genre, U ROY's music is guaranteed to make you move, groove, and maybe even learn a thing or two about the history of reggae. So next time you're looking for a musical education with a side of entertainment, look no further than the one and only U ROY.
