Our Take

R.E.M.'s Up (25th Anniversary Edition) is like a fine wine that's been left out in the sun for too long; it's still recognisable as a classic, but it's lost some of its sparkle. This album, originally released in 1998, showcases the band's transition from their jangly guitar-driven sound to a more experimental and electronic style.

The standout tracks, such as "Daysleeper" and "Lotus," still shine brightly, with Michael Stipe's iconic vocals driving the emotional core of the songs. However, some of the deeper cuts can feel a bit like leftover scraps from the cutting room floor.

Throughout the album, there are flashes of brilliance and innovation, but they are often overshadowed by moments that feel aimless and uninspired. The experimental nature of the record can be both its biggest strength and its downfall, with some tracks feeling like they're trying too hard to be different for the sake of being different.

Overall, Up (25th Anniversary Edition) is a mixed bag that will appeal to die-hard R.E.M. fans looking for a new perspective on the band's evolution. It's worth a listen for those interested in seeing how one of the biggest bands of the 80s and 90s tried to reinvent themselves in the late 90s. Just don't expect to be blown away by every track on this reissue.

About the artist

R.E.M.

R.E.M. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980, R.E.M. took the alternative rock world by storm with their jangly guitars, enigmatic lyrics, and Michael Stipe's unmistakable vocals. Combining elements of folk, punk, and post-punk, R.E.M. created a sound that was both timeless and ahead of its time. Their 1983 debut album, "Murmur," is widely regarded as a classic of the genre, with songs like "Radio Free Europe" and "Talk About the Passion" showcasing their melodic hooks and introspective lyrics. Over the years, R.E.M. continued to push boundaries and experiment with their sound, incorporating elements of country, folk, and electronic music into their repertoire. Despite their mainstream success, the band always maintained a sense of mystery and aloofness, with Stipe's cryptic lyrics and enigmatic stage presence adding to their mystique. With hits like "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "Man on the Moon," R.E.M. solidified their status as one of the most influential and innovative bands of their era. After more than three decades together, R.E.M. announced their breakup in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of timeless music and a devoted fanbase. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual listener, R.E.M.'s music is sure to leave a lasting impression. So grab your fedora, put on your best flannel shirt, and let yourself be transported to the world of R.E.M. You won't regret it.
