Our Take

ULTRAMAGNETIC MCs' "Travelling At The Speed Of Thought" is a trip back to the golden age of hip-hop, when beats were fat, rhymes were complex, and MCs weren't afraid to push the boundaries of the genre. Kool Keith's eccentric flow is on full display here, as he spits out stream-of-consciousness lyrics that range from bizarre to brilliant.

From the opening track "Ease Back" to the gritty closer "Funky Potion," the album is a masterclass in boom-bap production, courtesy of Ced-Gee and Moe Love. The stuttering drums, funky basslines, and soulful samples create a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

Standout tracks include the infectious "Watch Me Now," with its catchy hook and killer scratch work, and the mind-bending "Feelin' It," where Kool Keith's off-kilter delivery takes center stage.

However, the album isn't without its flaws. Some of the skits feel unnecessary and the hooks can be a bit repetitive. But these minor quibbles are easily overlooked when you're being bombarded with such raw energy and creativity.

Overall, "Travelling At The Speed Of Thought" is a must-listen for any fan of classic hip-hop. ULTRAMAGNETIC MCs may not be a household name, but their influence on the genre is undeniable. So hop on board, buckle up, and enjoy the ride at breakneck speed.

About the artist

Ultramagnetic MC's

ULTRAMAGNETIC MCs burst onto the scene in the late 1980s with their innovative and boundary-pushing approach to hip hop. Hailing from the Bronx, this eccentric group of MCs quickly gained a reputation for their off-kilter beats, abstract lyrics, and larger-than-life personalities. Led by the enigmatic Kool Keith, ULTRAMAGNETIC MCs blended elements of sci-fi, surrealism, and street smarts to create a sound that was truly ahead of its time. Their debut album, "Critical Beatdown," is widely regarded as a classic in hip hop history, with tracks like "Ego Tripping" and "Funky" still resonating with fans to this day. Despite their undeniable talent and influence on the genre, ULTRAMAGNETIC MCs never quite achieved mainstream success. But that's precisely what makes them so special. They were never afraid to push boundaries, experiment with new sounds, and stay true to their unique vision. Even after all these years, ULTRAMAGNETIC MCs continue to inspire and influence a new generation of artists. Their legacy lives on in the work of rappers and producers who dare to be different, who strive to defy expectations and limitations. So, if you're looking for something fresh, something bold, something truly out of this world, look no further than ULTRAMAGNETIC MCs. They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who appreciate creativity, originality, and a touch of madness, they are simply unmissable.
