Our Take

Finnish metal band Wintersun has never been one to shy away from epic, symphonic soundscapes, and their latest album, Time I, is no exception. Clocking in at a whopping 40 minutes for just four tracks, this album is like the metal equivalent of a Russian novel - a long, intricate journey that is not for the faint of heart. Opening track "When Time Fades Away" sets the tone with soaring vocals, blistering guitar riffs, and enough time changes to make even the most seasoned prog rock connoisseur dizzy. It's a whirlwind of sound that demands your attention from start to finish. From there, Wintersun takes us on a rollercoaster ride through fantasy realms and epic battles with tracks like "Sons of Winter and Stars" and "Land of Snow and Sorrow". The production is top-notch, with every instrument shining through in the mix and creating a truly immersive listening experience. But for all its grandeur and ambition, Time I does have its faults. The sheer length of the tracks can be overwhelming at times, and the lack of variety in song structures can make it feel a bit repetitive. However, for fans of epic, melodic metal, Wintersun's Time I is a must-listen - just be prepared to dedicate some serious time to it.
