Our Take
After what feels like an eternity, Simply Red have returned with their latest offering, "Time". The iconic band continue to deliver their signature smooth sound, blending soulful vocals with infectious melodies. However, much like a fine wine, the band seems to have aged like a stale biscuit left out in the rain. Mick Hucknall's vocals are as soulful as ever, but there's a sense of fatigue and a lack of inspiration that permeates throughout the album. The production feels a bit dated, with cheesy synths and predictable arrangements that fail to excite or surprise. Tracks like "Sweet Child" and "Thinking of You" showcase the band's ability to craft catchy hooks, but overall the album lacks the spark that made their earlier work so compelling. It often feels like they're going through the motions, ticking off all the boxes of a classic Simply Red album without bringing anything new to the table. That being said, there are moments of warmth and nostalgia that will surely please long-time fans of the band. Tracks like "Riding on a Train" and "Complete Love" harken back to the band's heyday, reminding us of the sheer talent and charisma that made them such a success in the first place.
