Our Take
Once in a blue moon, an album comes along that makes you question everything you thought you knew about music. Bert Kaempfert's "The Wonderful World of Bert Kaempfert" is not that album. From the jazzy horns to the swinging melodies, Kaempfert's signature sound is on full display in this collection of tracks. But don't be fooled by the title - there is nothing wonderful about this world. The album kicks off with the upbeat "Afrikaan Beat," a lively tune that will have you tapping your feet in no time. But as the tracks progress, you start to wonder if you've accidentally stumbled into a museum exhibit on elevator music. Kaempfert's arrangements are undeniably smooth, but they lack the depth and complexity that one looks for in a truly great record. Songs like "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" and "Love for Love" feel more like background music at a dentist's office than the next big hit. In the end, "The Wonderful World of Bert Kaempfert" is a pleasant enough listen, but it fails to leave a lasting impression.
