Our Take
Pendragon's "The Window of Life" is like a pint of warm beer on a rainy day in London - comforting yet slightly underwhelming. The veteran prog rockers deliver their signature blend of melodic tunes, intricate guitar solos, and mystical lyrics, but something feels like it's missing. Lead singer Nick Barrett's vocals are as solid as ever, soaring high above the complex arrangements like a majestic peregrine falcon. However, the lyrics sometimes veer into cheesy territory, with mystical references and grandiose imagery that can feel a bit overwrought. The standout track "Breaking the Spell" showcases Pendragon at their best, with a driving rhythm section and an infectious chorus that will have you singing along in no time. The production is crisp and clean, allowing each instrument to shine through without getting lost in the mix. Overall, "The Window of Life" is a solid effort from Pendragon, but it doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights of their earlier releases.
