Our Take

Japan, the band, not the country (although that would be an interesting concept for an album), have compiled their greatest hits in "The Very Best of Japan". And let me tell you, this album is a certified banger from start to finish.

From the moment you press play, you are transported back to the 80s with their synth-heavy tunes and David Sylvian's smooth vocals. It's like stepping into a time machine and being surrounded by neon lights and oversized shoulder pads.

Tracks like "Ghosts" and "Visions of China" will have you dancing like no one's watching, while slower ballads like "Nightporter" will have you reaching for a tissue to dab away your tears.

What really sets this album apart is the sheer talent of the band members. Mick Karn's funky basslines, Steve Jansen's intricate drum patterns, and Richard Barbieri's dreamy synths all come together to create a sound that is uniquely Japan.

But don't just take my word for it, give "The Very Best of Japan" a listen and transport yourself back to a time when music was all about big hair and even bigger tunes. You won't be disappointed.

About the artist

Japan

Japan is a band that defies easy categorization. Hailing from London in the late 1970s, this quintet is a melting pot of influences, blending synth-pop, new wave, and glam rock into a sound that is as unpredictable as it is infectious. Led by the enigmatic frontman David Sylvian, Japan catapulted onto the music scene with their debut album, "Adolescent Sex," in 1978. With their androgynous looks and avant-garde approach to music, they quickly garnered a dedicated following and critical acclaim. Their sound is a captivating mix of lush, atmospheric synths, intricate guitar work, and Sylvian's haunting vocals. Tracks like "Ghosts" and "Visions of China" showcase the band's ability to transport listeners to another world, while songs like "Life in Tokyo" and "Quiet Life" are irresistibly catchy. Despite their commercial success in Japan and the UK, Japan never quite broke through in the US, but their influence can be heard in the music of artists like Duran Duran and Tears for Fears. Their legacy lives on in the countless bands that continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in pop music. So if you're looking for a band that will transport you to another realm with their ethereal soundscapes and thought-provoking lyrics, look no further than Japan. They may have been ahead of their time, but their music is timeless.
