Our Take

Queensryche, the band that just won't quit, is back with their latest offering, "The Verdict". And the verdict is in: these ageing rockers still have a few tricks up their leather sleeves.

From the moment the screeching guitars kick in on the opening track, you know you're in for a wild ride. The band's trademark blend of prog rock and heavy metal is on full display here, with Geoff Tate's vocals soaring like a majestic eagle (or at least a slightly grizzled pigeon).

But it's not all about nostalgia for these guys. Tracks like "Man the Machine" and "Blood of the Levant" prove that Queensryche can still bring the noise with the best of them. The riffs are as crunchy as a bag of crisps left out in the rain, and the drumming is tighter than your jeans after Christmas dinner.

Of course, there are the obligatory ballads thrown in for good measure. But even these have a certain charm, with Tate's voice crooning like a lovestruck banshee.

Overall, "The Verdict" is a solid addition to Queensryche's extensive discography. It may not reinvent the wheel, but it's a damn good ride nonetheless. So strap in, and prepare to be rocked like it's 1984 all over again. And that's the pitchfork verdict.
