Cryptopsy's "The Unspoken King" is like getting a surprise hug from a clown - both confusing and slightly unsettling. This Canadian death metal band veers into uncharted territory with this release, incorporating elements of melodic death metal and even clean vocals. It's an ambitious move, but one that falls flat like a deflated balloon at a children's party.
The album kicks off with the track "Worship Your Demons," a blistering assault of blast beats and guttural growls that will leave you questioning your own mortality. However, things take a weird turn with songs like "The Headsmen" and "Bemoan the Martyr," which feature clean vocals that sound like they belong in a cheesy power metal band.
Cryptopsy's technical prowess is on full display throughout the album, with guitar solos that will make your head spin and drumming that will leave you questioning whether the drummer sold their soul to the devil.
