Our Take
Our Take
Italian maestro Ennio Morricone takes us on a twisted journey through the icy desolation of Antarctica with his haunting and atmospheric soundtrack for John Carpenter’s 1982 cult classic "The Thing."
The score perfectly captures the paranoia and isolation of the film, with Morricone expertly blending synthesizers, eerie drones, and chilling strings to create a sense of dread that lingers long after the credits roll.
Tracks like "Humanity Part 1" and "Bestiality" build tension with their dissonant melodies and discordant harmonies, while "Eternity" and "Humanity Part 2" offer moments of eerie beauty amidst the chaos.
Morricone’s use of unconventional instrumentation, including a haunting choir of voices and eerie electronic effects, adds an otherworldly quality to the music, further immersing the listener in the film’s icy, alien landscape.
While some may find the score’s minimalist approach lacking in traditional melody, its unsettling atmosphere and innovative use of sound make it a standout in Morricone’s extensive body of work.
Overall, "The Thing" soundtrack is a masterclass in atmospheric scoring, perfectly complementing Carpenter’s tense and claustrophobic film. Ennio Morricone proves once again why he is considered one of the greatest film composers of all time.
