Our Take
Warrant's "The Speed of Metal" has all the subtlety of a sledgehammer wrapped in spandex. The glam metal veterans have returned with a high-octane blast of cheesy riffs, wailing vocals, and enough hairspray to keep a small country's economy afloat. From the opening track "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (wait, wrong band), it's clear that Warrant are not here to reinvent the wheel. They're here to party like it's 1989, and damn it if they don't succeed. Tracks like "Metal Mayhem" and "Leather and Lace" may not break new ground, but they'll have you air guitaring in your bedroom like a teenager all over again. Lead singer Jani Lane's vocals still soar, hitting those high notes with a swagger that only comes from years of rocking out in spandex pants. And the guitar work is as shredding as ever, with solos that could melt the faces off even the most jaded metalhead. But it's not all hairspray and leather jackets. The ballad "Love in Stereo" shows a softer side to the band, with heartfelt lyrics and a surprising amount of emotional depth. So slip on your leather trousers, crank up the volume, and let Warrant take you on a wild ride back to the glory days of 80s metal. "The Speed of Metal" may not be groundbreaking, but it's a damn good time. Verdict: 8/10.
