Our Take

The Rise & Fallin, the latest offering from British ska legends MADNESS, is a whirlwind of infectious melodies, irreverent lyrics, and that signature cheeky charm that has made them household names for over four decades. Opening track "One Step Beyond (The Aisle)" sets the tone for the album, with its frantic tempo and irresistible horn section. The band's playful lyrics and distinctive vocal harmonies shine through on tracks like "Baggy Trousers (In the Wash)" and "Our House (Under Renovation)".

However, not every moment on The Rise & Fallin hits the mark. The experimental track "Skankin' Grandma" feels out of place amidst the more traditional ska offerings, while the extended saxophone solo on "Night Boat to Milan" veers dangerously close to self-indulgence.

Despite these missteps, MADNESS have crafted an album that is as fun and infectious as ever. Tracks like "House of Fun (During Lockdown)" and "Driving in My Car (To Nowhere)" are sure to get fans dancing along, while the poignant ballad "It Must Be Love (Because There's Nowhere Else to Go)" showcases the band's more tender side.

Overall, The Rise & Fallin is a solid addition to MADNESS's impressive discography. While it may not reach the heights of their classic albums like One Step Beyond or Absolutely, it is still a must-listen for any fan of British ska. So don your bowler hat, grab a pint, and let MADNESS take you on a wild, wacky ride.
