In a world where castration was once a legitimate career move, IL DIVINO SOSPIRO's latest album featuring Massimo Mazzeo and Filippo Mineccia is a mesmerizing trip back in time to the era of the castrati.
The album opens with Mazzeo's fiery rendition of "Sul'aria" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro", setting the stage for a rollercoaster of emotions that only a eunuch soprano could convey. Mineccia's haunting performance of Handel's "Vivi, tiranno!" is a masterclass in vocal control and emotional depth, leaving us in awe of the lost art of castrato singing.
The standout track, however, has to be Mazzeo's rendition of Porpora's "Alto Giove" from the opera "Polifemo". His voice soars effortlessly over the orchestra, painting a vivid picture of the mythological giant's anguish in a way that only a castrato could do.
IL DIVINO SOSPIRO's album is a reminder of the incredible vocal talent that was silenced in the name of art, and Mazzeo and Mineccia do justice to the legacy of the castrati with their powerful performances.
