Our Take

PERE UBU's debut album, The Modern Dance, is a rollercoaster ride of avant-garde soundscapes and unpredictable twists, much like a drunken night out in Manchester. From the opening track "Non-Alignment Pact," you can tell this band isn't your typical run-of-the-mill rock group.

David Thomas's vocals are like a cross between Captain Beefheart and a drunk uncle at a wedding, and I mean that in the best way possible. The band's use of dissonant guitars and unconventional song structures make each track feel like a surprise waiting to be unwrapped.

Tracks like "Street Waves" and "Life Stinks" are perfect examples of PERE UBU's ability to blend chaos with melody in a way that feels both unsettling and strangely captivating. It's like being trapped in a funhouse with no way out, but you're enjoying the ride too much to care.
