Our Take

Jimmy Giuffre's "New York Concerts" is a delightful romp through the mind of a jazz genius. Released in 1992, this live recording captures Giuffre at the top of his game, weaving intricate melodies and avant-garde improvisation into a mesmerising musical tapestry.

From the moment the first notes of "Four Brothers" hit your eardrums, you know you're in for a wild ride. Giuffre's unique blend of clarinet, saxophone and flute is nothing short of mind-blowing, with each instrument taking on a life of its own.

Tracks like "The Train and the River" and "Sketch" showcase Giuffre's prowess as a composer and arranger, with complex harmonies and challenging rhythms that will keep even the most seasoned jazz aficionado on their toes.

But what really sets "New York Concerts" apart is Giuffre's fearless exploration of the boundaries of jazz. His willingness to push the envelope, to experiment and improvise, is what makes this album truly special.

So if you're looking for a jazz album that will transport you to another dimension, look no further than Jimmy Giuffre's "New York Concerts". It's a wild, unpredictable ride that will leave you begging for more. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Jimmy Giuffre

Jimmy Giuffre was a jazz musician who was as cool as the other side of the pillow. With a career spanning over five decades, Giuffre was known for his innovative approach to music, blending elements of jazz, folk, and classical music with ease. Born in Dallas, Texas in 1921, Giuffre began playing the clarinet at a young age and quickly made a name for himself on the jazz scene. His unique playing style and experimental compositions set him apart from his peers, earning him a reputation as a true trailblazer in the world of music. Giuffre's work with his iconic trio, which included Jim Hall on guitar and Ralph Pena on bass, remains some of the most groundbreaking and influential music in jazz history. Their album "The Jimmy Giuffre 3" is a must-listen for any music enthusiast, showcasing Giuffre's daring improvisation and deep understanding of musical theory. In addition to his work with the trio, Giuffre also collaborated with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Ornette Coleman and Paul Bley. His willingness to push the boundaries of traditional jazz music made him a true maverick in the industry. Sadly, Giuffre passed away in 2008, but his legacy lives on through his timeless music. His ability to seamlessly blend genres and create music that was ahead of its time is a testament to his talent and creativity. Jimmy Giuffre may be gone, but his music will forever be remembered as a shining example of what it means to be a true innovator in the world of jazz.
