Our Take

Buckle up, folks, because today we're diving into the smooth and suave sounds of George Shearing with "The Essential Recordings." This album is like a sophisticated cocktail party for your ears, with Shearing's signature blend of jazz, swing, and bebop swirling together in perfect harmony.

From the twinkling piano keys of "Lullaby of Birdland" to the toe-tapping rhythms of "I'll Remember April," Shearing effortlessly transports you to a smoky jazz club in the heart of New York City. His impeccable timing and buttery smooth delivery will have you swaying in your seat from start to finish.

But don't be fooled by the elegant exterior of Shearing's music – there's a mischievous twinkle in his eye that keeps things interesting. Tracks like "Mambo Inn" and "Cuban Love Song" inject a playful energy into the mix, reminding us that jazz is not just for sipping martinis in a velvet lounge – it's also for dancing like nobody's watching.

So grab a cocktail (or a cup of tea, if that's more your style) and let George Shearing whisk you away on a musical journey you won't soon forget. "The Essential Recordings" is a must-have for any jazz lover looking to add a touch of class and a whole lot of fun to their collection. Cheers to George Shearing – may his music continue to enchant and inspire for years to come.

About the artist

George Shearing

George Shearing may not be a name that immediately springs to mind when you think of iconic jazz musicians, but this British-born pianist has left an indelible mark on the music world. With his distinctive blend of bebop and swing, Shearing has captivated audiences for over half a century. Born in 1919 in London, Shearing lost his sight at birth but never let that hinder his musical ambitions. He learned to play the piano by ear and quickly gained a reputation for his incredible skill and improvisational abilities. In the late 1940s, Shearing burst onto the American music scene, wowing audiences with his unique style and infectious energy. Shearing's most famous composition, "Lullaby of Birdland," has become a jazz standard, covered by countless artists over the years. His innovative approach to harmony and rhythm set him apart from his peers, earning him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Despite his considerable talent, Shearing remained humble and approachable throughout his career, endearing himself to fans and fellow musicians alike. With his sharp wit and charming personality, Shearing was a true delight both on and off the stage. Sadly, George Shearing passed away in 2011, but his legacy lives on through his timeless music. Whether you're a seasoned jazz aficionado or a newcomer to the genre, Shearing's infectious melodies and exquisite piano playing are sure to leave you spellbound. So sit back, pour yourself a glass of your favourite tipple, and let George Shearing's music transport you to a world of elegance and sophistication.
