Our Take
Our Take
Ah, Lieutenant Pigeon, a band truly ahead of their time, or perhaps just stuck in the past. The Decca Years compilation serves as a nostalgic trip down memory lane, complete with quirky synth melodies and an abundance of pigeon references.
The album kicks off with their hit single "Mouldy Old Dough," a track that perfectly captures the essence of a bygone era when keyboards were king and lyrics were, well, a bit odd. Lieutenant Pigeon had a knack for combining infectious melodies with a touch of whimsy, and this album is proof of their unique charm.
Tracks like "Opus 300" showcase the band's musical prowess, with intricate keyboard solos that would give Rick Wakeman a run for his money. However, some songs do fall flat, with repetitive chord progressions and lacklustre lyrics that leave you scratching your head.
One can't help but admire Lieutenant Pigeon's dedication to their craft, even if it means playing second fiddle to more mainstream acts. The Decca Years may not catapult them to superstardom, but it does solidify their place in the annals of quirky music history.
So, if you're in the mood for a trip back in time to a simpler, stranger musical landscape, give Lieutenant Pigeon a spin. Just be prepared for a wild ride filled with keytars, pigeons, and a whole lot of charm.

About the artist
Lieutenant Pigeon
There are few bands in the history of music as delightfully eccentric as Lieutenant Pigeon. Hailing from Coventry, England, this peculiar outfit made a name for themselves in the early 1970s with their quirky blend of rock, pop, and... wait for it... the sounds of a honky-tonk piano played by a pigeon. Led by the enigmatic frontman Rob Woodward, Lieutenant Pigeon quickly captured the hearts of the British public with their infectious tunes and wacky stage presence. With chart-topping hits like "Mouldy Old Dough" and "Desperate Dan," the band carved out a niche for themselves in the pantheon of truly unique musical acts. But don't be mistaken, Lieutenant Pigeon was more than just a gimmick. Behind the pigeon-infused antics lay a group of talented musicians who knew how to craft a catchy tune. With Woodward's distinctive vocals, Nigel Fletcher's driving guitar riffs, and Hilda Woodward's expert piano playing (pigeon-assisted, of course), Lieutenant Pigeon created music that was as memorable as it was unconventional. Despite their success, Lieutenant Pigeon never took themselves too seriously. Their playful attitude and unorthodox approach to music endeared them to fans and critics alike, making them a true cult favorite in the British music scene. So if you're looking for a band that's equal parts fun, quirky, and talented, look no further than Lieutenant Pigeon. With their infectious melodies and pigeon-powered charm, this Coventry crew is sure to leave you tapping your feet and scratching your head in equal measure.
