Our Take
Smokie, the best of what, exactly? That's the question on everyone's lips as they delve into this 'best of' compilation from the British rockers. With hits like "Living Next Door to Alice" and "Don't Play Your Rock 'n' Roll to Me", Smokie certainly leant towards the more ... eclectic side of the 70s music scene. Listening to this album is like taking a time machine back to a world where denim was king and hair was bigger than your dreams. The production values are charmingly outdated, with the reverb on the vocals so thick you could swim in it. But what truly sets Smokie apart is their ability to take cheesy lyrics and make them sound almost profound. "If you think God is dead, better not cross the road", they warn on "Mexican Girl", a sentiment that is both baffling and strangely compelling. For fans of 70s nostalgia, this album is a must-listen. For everyone else, it's a slightly confusing journey into the world of a band that you probably forgot existed. But hey, isn't that what music is all about? Taking a chance on something new, even if it's just old music dressed up in bell-bottoms and platform shoes. Smokie, we salute you.
