About the artist
John Martyn
John Martyn, the legendary British folk artist known for his innovative blend of folk, blues, and jazz, is a musical maverick whose influence has left an indelible mark on the music industry. With his soulful vocals, intricate guitar playing, and experimental approach to songwriting, Martyn is a true icon of the British music scene. Born in Surrey in 1948, Martyn began his musical career in the 1960s, playing in local bands before releasing his debut album, "London Conversation," in 1967. From there, Martyn continued to push the boundaries of traditional folk music, incorporating elements of jazz and blues into his sound and pioneering a new genre known as folk fusion. Martyn's magnum opus, the 1973 album "Solid Air," is widely regarded as one of the greatest folk albums of all time, featuring the haunting title track dedicated to Martyn's friend and fellow musician, Nick Drake. The album showcases Martyn's unparalleled songwriting skills, as well as his unique ability to create a sonic landscape that is both intimate and expansive. Throughout his career, Martyn continued to push the boundaries of folk music, collaborating with artists such as Eric Clapton and Phil Collins and releasing a string of critically acclaimed albums. His live performances were legendary, with Martyn known for his improvisational skills and electrifying stage presence. Sadly, Martyn passed away in 2009, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of music lovers around the world. From his soul-stirring ballads to his electrifying guitar solos, John Martyn will always be remembered as a true original, a musical genius who dared to defy convention and create something truly extraordinary.
