Our Take

The Buggles' debut album, "The Age of Plastic," is a time capsule of 80s synth-pop cheese that somehow manages to be both nostalgically cringe-worthy and oddly infectious. From the iconic hit "Video Killed the Radio Star" to the delightfully bizarre "Astroboy (And The Proles On Parade)," this album is a masterclass in eccentric pop production. Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes clearly had a blast in the studio, layering quirky synth melodies over pulsating drum machines and outlandish vocal effects. The result is a technicolor dreamscape of sound that feels like stepping into a retro-futuristic disco inferno. While some may dismiss The Buggles as a novelty act, there's a strange charm to their over-the-top theatricality. Tracks like "Living in the Plastic Age" and "Kid Dynamo" are campy delights that will have you bopping along and rolling your eyes in equal measure. Sure, the lyrics may be as deep as a kiddie pool and the production is as subtle as a sledgehammer, but that's all part of the fun. "The Age of Plastic" is a kitschy time warp back to an era of shoulder pads, neon lights, and excessive hairspray. So grab your Walkman, dust off your leg warmers, and let The Buggles take you on a wild ride through the neon-lit streets of pop nostalgia.
