Our Take

If anyone knows how to make the most out of a minimalist setup, it's Shellac. The rock trio composed of Steve Albini, Bob Weston, and Todd Trainer, have been churning out their unique brand of angular, abrasive rock since the early '90s, and their 1998 album Terraform is a prime example of their artistry.

From the opening track "Didn't We Deserve a Look at You the Way You Really Are," Shellac waste no time in getting straight to the point. The band's signature blend of math rock precision and punk rock aggression is on full display here, with Albini's biting vocals cutting through the mix like a knife.

Tracks like "This is a Picture" and "Disgrace" showcase Shellac's ability to create tension and release it in the most satisfying way possible. The band's minimalist approach to songwriting may not be for everyone, but for those willing to dig deeper, there are plenty of rewards to be found.
