Ah, EXECRATION, the band that manages to make lethargy sound utterly thrilling. Syndicate Of Lethargy is a chaotic, cacophonous journey through the realms of extreme metal, with its tumultuous blend of death metal, black metal, and even a hint of doom thrown in for good measure.
From the opening track, "Reign of Chaos," EXECRATION grabs the listener by the throat and doesn't let go until the final note of "Lurking Presence." The band's unrelenting energy and sheer audacity are undeniable, but at times it feels like they are trying to cram too many ideas into each song, resulting in a slightly disjointed listen.
That being said, there are moments of brilliance scattered throughout the album. "Grinding Down the Bone" showcases EXECRATION's ability to create truly bone-crushing riffs, while "Worship the Dead" is a masterclass in atmosphere and mood.
However, Syndicate Of Lethargy does suffer from a lack of coherence at times, with the band seemingly more focused on creating chaos than crafting fully-formed songs. This may be a deliberate choice on the part of EXECRATION, but it ultimately detracts from the overall listening experience.
In the end, Syndicate Of Lethargy is a solid effort from a band that clearly has talent to spare. With a bit more focus and refinement, EXECRATION could truly make a mark on the extreme metal scene.
