Our Take

Tower of Power's latest offering, "Step Up," is a funky throwback that will make you want to dust off your disco ball and throw on some flares. This veteran group of musicians has been bringing the groove for over 50 years, and they're showing no signs of slowing down.

From the moment the album kicks off with the infectious brass section on the title track, you know you're in for a good time. The band's signature blend of soul, funk, and R&B is on full display here, with tight arrangements and killer horn solos that will have you grooving in your seat.

Tracks like "Do It With Soul" and "Stop" showcase Tower of Power's ability to blend catchy hooks with serious musicianship, while slower jams like "On The Soul Side Of Town" and "Butter Fried" give the album some necessary depth and soul.

But it's not all smooth sailing on "Step Up." The overly cheesy lyrics on songs like "Get What You Want" and "Do It" can be a bit cringeworthy at times, and the production can feel a bit dated in places. Overall, though, Tower of Power prove once again that they are masters of their craft, delivering a fun and funky album that will have you dancing all night long. Step up, indeed.
