Our Take

If you’re looking for a metal album that sounds like it was recorded in a tin can by a bunch of angry preschoolers, then Metallica’s St. Anger (Some Kind Of Orange Vinyl) is the record for you. This orange vinyl pressing of the band’s notorious 2003 release is as garish as it is sonically abrasive.

From the clanging drums that sound more like someone hitting a trash can with a hammer to the muddy production that makes you wonder if the band recorded this in a sewer, every aspect of St. Anger screams “DIY gone wrong.” The guitars are fuzzier than a moldy peach, the vocals are angrier than a toddler denied their favourite toy, and the lyrics are more nonsensical than a cat wearing a top hat.

But despite all its flaws, there’s a certain charm to St. Anger (Some Kind Of Orange Vinyl). It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion – you know it’s going to end badly, but you just can’t look away. And hey, at least Metallica had the balls to experiment with their sound and take a risk, even if it did result in an album that leaves you scratching your head in confusion.

So, if you’re a glutton for punishment and enjoy your music with a side of chaos, then Metallica’s St. Anger (Some Kind Of Orange Vinyl) is the album for you. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you.

About the artist

Metallica

Metallica: The Fearsome Four Horsemen of Heavy Metal With their thunderous riffs, blistering solos, and anthemic choruses, Metallica have cemented their place as one of the most influential and iconic bands in the history of heavy metal. Formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, the band burst onto the scene with their debut album, "Kill 'Em All," in 1983, and never looked back. Led by the charismatic frontman James Hetfield, whose gravelly vocals and intense stage presence have become synonymous with the band's sound, Metallica quickly established themselves as masters of the thrash metal genre. Their second album, "Ride the Lightning," and third album, "Master of Puppets," are considered classics of the genre, showcasing the band's virtuosic musicianship and knack for crafting epic, multi-layered songs. But it was their breakout self-titled album, commonly known as "The Black Album," released in 1991, that propelled Metallica to mainstream success. Featuring hits like "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters," the album showcased a more refined, radio-friendly sound while still retaining the band's trademark intensity. Over the years, Metallica have faced their fair share of controversies, from the infamous Napster lawsuit to the polarizing collaborations with Lou Reed and the misguided foray into the world of St. Anger snare drums. Despite these missteps, the band have persevered and continued to push the boundaries of metal music, earning them a dedicated global fanbase and a place in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. So, grab your leather jacket, crank up the volume, and get ready to headbang with Metallica – the fearsome four horsemen of heavy metal.
