Our Take

Albert Ayler's "Love Cryin" is a sonic journey like no other. Filled with a cacophony of free jazz, screeching saxophones, and spine-tingling vocals, this album is not for the faint of heart. Ayler's experimental approach to music is both fearless and captivating, drawing listeners in with its raw energy and unpredictability.

From the haunting opening track "Ghosts," to the explosive title track "Love Cry," Ayler takes us on a wild ride through his musical world. The interplay between Ayler's saxophone and the rest of the band is frenetic and chaotic, yet strangely beautiful in its own way.

The standout track on the album has to be "Truth is Marching In," a powerful and impassioned piece that showcases Ayler's immense talent as a saxophonist. The song builds to a crescendo of noise and emotion, leaving listeners on the edge of their seats.

Overall, "Love Cry" is a groundbreaking album that pushes the boundaries of what jazz can be. Albert Ayler's fearless approach to music is a breath of fresh air in a world filled with cookie-cutter pop songs. If you're looking for something truly unique and daring, look no further than "Love Cry." Just be prepared to have your mind blown.

About the artist

Sun Ra

Ah, Albert Ayler – the man, the myth, the legend. This avant-garde saxophonist was a force to be reckoned with in the 1960s, pushing the boundaries of jazz like no one else before him. With his frenetic playing style and freeform improvisations, Ayler was the sonic equivalent of a hurricane – wild, unpredictable, and utterly mesmerizing. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1936, Ayler cut his teeth playing in R&B bands before making the switch to free jazz in the early 1960s. It was here that he truly found his voice, unleashing a torrent of blistering solos and guttural screams that set him apart from his peers. His 1964 album "Spiritual Unity" is a masterpiece of the genre, a cacophonous whirlwind of sound that still sounds fresh and vital over half a century later. But Ayler's music was not just about technical prowess – it was about emotion, about spirituality, about transcending the confines of traditional jazz. His compositions were steeped in the blues and gospel traditions, with echoes of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman reverberating throughout. To listen to an Albert Ayler record is to take a journey into the unknown, to be swept up in a whirlwind of sound that is at once exhilarating and terrifying. Sadly, Ayler's life was cut tragically short in 1970, when he was found dead in New York's East River at the age of just 34. But his legacy lives on, inspiring countless musicians to push the boundaries of their art and challenge the status quo. So here's to you, Albert Ayler – may your spirit continue to soar, forever restless, forever free.
