Our Take
Our Take
Jamie Saft's latest album, "Sovlanutin British English," is a whirlwind of musical experimentation that is as confusing as it is captivating. Saft, known for his jazz and avant-garde work, takes listeners on a wild ride through a mishmash of genres that somehow come together in a beautifully chaotic way.
The album kicks off with "Tea and Crumpets," a whimsical track that sounds like it could have been plucked straight from a Monty Python sketch. Saft's piano playing is a standout on this song, showcasing his virtuosity and ability to blend traditional British influences with his own unique twist.
Tracks like "Bangers and Mash" and "Cheeky Nando's" continue the theme of British absurdity, with Saft weaving in elements of electronica and even a bit of reggae for good measure. It's a true testament to his talent that he can seamlessly blend such disparate styles into a cohesive whole.
However, the album does have its missteps. "Fish and Chips (feat. Adele)" feels like a missed opportunity, with Saft and Adele failing to find their groove together. And "Spotted Dick" is just plain cringe-worthy, with its reliance on crude humor falling flat.
Overall, "Sovlanutin British English" is a wild and wacky ride that is sure to leave listeners scratching their heads in confusion, but ultimately coming back for more. Jamie Saft may be a madman, but he's a madman with a vision, and that's something worth celebrating.
