Our Take

U2's latest offering, Songs of Experience (Extra Deluxe Version), is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get, but you'll probably end up feeling a bit sick afterwards. Bono and the gang are back with their trademark anthemic sound, complete with soaring vocals and catchy hooks that will have you singing along in no time. But be warned, this album is not for the faint-hearted.

From the opening track, "Love Is All We Have Left," it's clear that U2 is not holding back on the melodrama. Bono's vocals are as passionate as ever, but it's hard to take him seriously when he's crooning about love and peace while sporting those ridiculous sunglasses. The production is slick and polished, but it feels like U2 is trying a little too hard to recapture their glory days.

Tracks like "Get Out of Your Own Way" and "American Soul" are decent enough, but they lack the raw energy and innovation of earlier U2 hits. It's hard not to cringe at lines like "It's not a place / This country is to me a sound of drum and bass / You close your eyes to look around" - seriously, Bono?

Overall, Songs of Experience is a mixed bag. Fans of U2's classic sound will find plenty to enjoy here, but those looking for something fresh and exciting may be left feeling a bit underwhelmed. Stick to The Joshua Tree, folks.
