About the artist

Cannonball Adderley

CANNONBALL ADDERLEY Blowout saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, born Julian Edwin Adderley, was a force to be reckoned with in the world of jazz. Hailing from Tampa, Florida, this larger-than-life musician made waves in the 1950s and 60s with his distinctive blend of bebop, hard bop, and soulful jazz. Known for his raucous playing style and infectious personality, Cannonball Adderley was a true showman on stage. With his soulful tone and unmatched improvisational skills, he could make his saxophone sing like no other. It's no wonder he was dubbed "Cannonball" - this guy's playing was explosive! Adderley had a knack for surrounding himself with top-notch musicians, forming the iconic Cannonball Adderley Quintet in the late 1950s. With classic albums like "Somethin' Else" and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at 'The Club'", Adderley and his crew solidified their place in jazz history. In addition to his formidable skills as a saxophonist, Cannonball Adderley was also a talented composer and arranger. His compositions, such as "Work Song" and "Jive Samba", have become jazz standards that are still played by musicians today. Sadly, Cannonball Adderley's life was cut short in 1975, but his musical legacy lives on. His influence can be heard in the playing of countless jazz musicians, and his records continue to be cherished by fans old and new. Cannonball Adderley may be gone, but his music will forever be a blast!
