Our Take

WINDIR's Soknadalr is a mind-blowing journey through the foggy forests of Norwegian black metal, a genre known for its raw intensity and atmospheric soundscapes. This album serves as a powerful reminder of the band's ability to transport listeners to another realm, filled with tales of ancient battles and majestic mountains.

From the soaring riffs of "Journey to the End" to the haunting beauty of "Saknet," WINDIR showcases their mastery of melody and aggression. Frontman Valfar's guttural screams add a primal energy to each track, while the pristine production allows every instrument to shine through the chaos.

One moment you're headbanging to the relentless drums of "The Wind Farewell," and the next you're hypnotized by the serene acoustic interludes woven throughout the album. WINDIR's ability to seamlessly blend black metal with folk influences sets them apart from their peers, creating a truly unique listening experience.

Soknadalr is not just an album, it's a sonic adventure that demands to be experienced in its entirety. So grab your mead horn, don your Viking helmet, and prepare to be swept away by the epic soundscapes of WINDIR. Raise your swords and horns to the sky, for Soknadalr is a triumphant return to the golden age of Norwegian black metal. A masterpiece of modern metal that deserves a place in every true metalhead's collection.

About the artist

Windir

Ah, WINDIR. The enigmatic, eclectic artist whose music blurs the lines between folk, black metal, and Viking metal. Hailing from Norway, WINDIR's unique blend of melodic riffs, haunting vocals, and epic storytelling has garnered them a cult following on the international music scene. Formed in 1994, WINDIR quickly made a name for themselves with their debut album "Sóknardalr". The album's raw, atmospheric sound and epic compositions cemented WINDIR's reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting bands in the metal genre. But it wasn't just their music that set WINDIR apart. The band's charismatic frontman, Valfar, was known for his larger-than-life stage presence and eccentric personality. With his wild, untamed mane of hair and penchant for dressing in traditional Viking garb, Valfar was a true showman who captivated audiences with his intense performances. Sadly, WINDIR's story took a tragic turn in 2004 when Valfar tragically passed away in a snowstorm in Norway's Sogndal mountains. Despite this devastating loss, the band continued to release music in honour of Valfar's memory, with their final album "Likferd" being widely regarded as a masterpiece of the genre. WINDIR's legacy lives on to this day, with their music continuing to inspire a new generation of metal artists and fans. With their unique sound, compelling storytelling, and larger-than-life personality, WINDIR will always be remembered as one of the true greats of the metal world.
