Our Take
Katy Perry's latest offering, "Smile," is like a sugary sweet confection that leaves a bitter aftertaste. The pop diva's sixth studio album is a rollercoaster of high energy bangers and heartfelt ballads, but unfortunately, it fails to deliver the punch we were all hoping for. From the opening track, "Never Really Over," Perry sets the stage for what could have been a triumphant return to form. The infectious beats and catchy hooks definitely get your toes tapping, but the lacklustre lyrics and predictable production leave much to be desired. Tracks like "Cry About It Later" and "Tucked" showcase Perry's signature cheeky humour and playful personality, but they lack the depth and maturity we've seen glimpses of in her previous work. It's as if Perry is stuck in a never-ending loop of bubblegum pop, unable to break free and show us what she's truly capable of. Despite its shortcomings, "Smile" does have its moments. The title track, in particular, is a poignant reminder to keep pushing forward and find the beauty in life's struggles. Perry's vocals soar on this stripped-back ballad, proving that she still has the chops to deliver a powerful performance when given the chance. Overall, "Smile" is a mixed bag of emotions and sounds. While it may not be the album we were hoping for, it's still a solid addition to Perry's discography. Here's hoping she can find her footing and deliver something truly special on her next release. Until then, let's all try to keep smiling through the disappointment.
