Our Take

If Pitchfork Magazine had a lovechild with Monty Python, it would sound a lot like Smith & McClennan's latest offering, "Small Town Stories." This album is a delightful mix of whimsical storytelling and infectious melodies that will have you tapping your toes and laughing out loud in equal measure.

From the opening track, "Biscuit Tin," with its jaunty acoustic guitar and witty lyrics about lost love and forgotten snacks, to the closing ballad, "Rainy Day Blues," where Smith & McClellan harmonize like a pair of lovestruck swans, this album is a rollercoaster of emotions and musical styles.

The duo's chemistry is undeniable, with McClellan's soulful vocals perfectly complementing Smith's cheeky banjo lines and clever wordplay. It's a match made in musical heaven, and it shows in every note they play.

Standout tracks include the toe-tapping "Busking in the Rain," a playful ode to street performers and inclement weather, and the hauntingly beautiful "Ghost of a Love Song," a poignant reflection on lost love and regret.

Overall, "Small Town Stories" is a breath of fresh air in a music scene overrun with pretentiousness and cynicism. Smith & McClellan bring a much-needed dose of humour and heart to the table, reminding us that music doesn't always have to be serious to be meaningful. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and let this album sweep you away to a small town full of big stories and even bigger laughs. Cheers, darlings.

About the artist

Smith & McClennan

Introducing the dynamic duo that is Smith & McClennan, the musical equivalent of a perfectly brewed cuppa on a rainy day in London. With their infectious melodies and whip-smart lyricism, this pair is taking the indie folk scene by storm. Hailing from the picturesque shores of the Isle of Skye, Smith & McClennan bring a fresh perspective to the genre with their unique blend of Celtic soul and modern indie sensibilities. Their harmonies are as tight as a pair of skinny jeans, weaving effortlessly through lush arrangements that will transport you to a place where the whisky flows like water. Smith & McClennan's debut album, "The Sound of Silence," is a masterclass in storytelling, with each track painting a vivid picture of love, loss, and everything in between. From the haunting beauty of "Midnight on the Moors" to the rollicking energy of "Whisky in the Jar," this album is a must-listen for anyone with a penchant for toe-tapping tunes and heart-wrenching ballads. But don't let their whimsical charm fool you – Smith & McClennan are serious musicians with serious chops. With years of experience under their belts and a knack for pushing the boundaries of folk music, this duo is poised to take the world by storm. So grab a pint, put on your dancing shoes, and prepare to be swept away by the infectious sounds of Smith & McClennan. Trust me, you won't regret it.
