Our Take
Simply Red's "Simplified" album is like a cup of tea on a rainy day - comforting, familiar, and a little bit bland. Mick Hucknall's soulful vocals shine through as always, but the stripped-back acoustic arrangements feel a bit like listening to an elevator music version of their hits. The album opens with "Perfect Love," a cheesy love song that sounds like it was plucked straight from a 90s rom-com soundtrack. It's catchy, but lacks the emotional depth that Hucknall is known for. "Something Got Me Started" is a highlight, with its funky bassline and infectious groove, but even this track feels watered down in its acoustic form. Tracks like "A Song for You" and "Wonderland" showcase Hucknall's vocal prowess, but ultimately fall flat due to the lack of instrumental variety. The album closes with a lacklustre cover of The Stylistics' "You Make Me Feel Brand New," which pales in comparison to the original classic. Overall, "Simplified" feels like Simply Red playing it safe, sticking to their trademark sound without taking any risks. While fans of the band's softer side may enjoy this album, those looking for the infectious energy of hits like "Holding Back the Years" may be left wanting more.
