Our Take

SENTENCED's Shadows Of (The) Past on Ice Clear/Black Smoke Vinyl is like a blast from the past in all the wrong ways. This reissue of the Finnish band's debut album is a reminder of a time when metal was stuck in the muddy waters of mediocrity. From the moment the needle hits the groove, you're transported back to the '90s, when hair was big, solos were shredding, and subtlety was nowhere to be found.

The production on this vinyl reissue is as heavy as a lead brick, crushing any hope of nuance or dynamics. The guitars sound like they've been dipped in molasses, dragging their way through each riff with all the finesse of a drunken elephant. The vocals are buried beneath layers of distortion, making it impossible to decipher a single word of the lyrics.

But hey, at least the packaging is nice. The Ice Clear/Black Smoke Vinyl is a thing of beauty, with swirling patterns that look like a stormy night sky. It's almost enough to distract you from the sonic mess that lies within.

In the end, Shadows Of (The) Past is a relic of a bygone era, when metal was more concerned with image than substance. It may have its nostalgic charms, but ultimately, this reissue is best left in the shadows where it belongs. So grab your headphones, press play, and prepare to be transported back to a time when metal was loud, proud, and oh so very, very average.

About the artist

Sentenced

SENTENCED is the enigmatic musical project of Dylan "The Sound Sentencer" Jones, a self-proclaimed musical detective who has been making waves in the underground music scene for years. With his signature blend of haunting melodies, twisted lyrics, and mind-bending soundscapes, SENTENCED has built a cult following of devoted fans who can't get enough of his unique brand of sonic sorcery. Jones, who hails from the gritty streets of East London, first burst onto the music scene with his debut album "Guilty Pleasures," a dark and brooding exploration of love, loss, and redemption. Since then, he has released a string of critically acclaimed albums, each one pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of experimental music. SENTENCED's live performances are a sight to behold, with Jones commanding the stage like a mad musical maestro, his haunting vocals and mesmerizing guitar riffs holding the audience in a trance-like state. Whether performing in intimate underground venues or massive outdoor festivals, SENTENCED never fails to captivate and inspire. With his finger firmly on the pulse of the music industry, Jones is not afraid to speak his mind, often courting controversy with his outspoken views on everything from politics to pop culture. But love him or hate him, there's no denying that SENTENCED is a force to be reckoned with in the world of music. So whether you're a die-hard fan or a curious newcomer, do yourself a favor and dive into the twisted world of SENTENCED. You won't be disappointed.
